The child’s speech becomes much clearer due to consistent use of hearing aids, one of the many factors related to early identification and intervention examined in the Outcomes of Children with Hearing Loss study. Researchers at the University of Iowa, Boys Town National Research Hospital, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill also identified some factors and limitations in service delivery that need to be addressed to promote optimal outcomes for children who are hard of hearing. The results from the study are published in a monographic...

Children who start school at the age of five show "less positive attitudes to reading, and showed poorer text comprehension" than those who started at seven years old. That's according to a recent study by a New Zealand university. New Zealand children can start school at any time between their fifth and sixth birthdays. But exactly when is the right time? These young children are enjoying playtime at Willowbank Primary School in Auckland. But are they too young to be in school? A report published by the University of Central Otago in New Zealand said children who begin school at the age of five show "less positive attitudes to reading, and showed poorer text comprehension" than those who started at seven. Most children who attend school in New Zealand will start between their fifth and sixth birthdays. Deidre Alderson is the principal of Willowbank School. She says in her experience there is no right time to start school, it all comes down to each individual child. "There is no set best age. It is student dependant, child dependent and each school, each teacher will have a different reason and understanding of when a child should start. So in New Zealand we start children from five years of age until they are six but that does not necessarily fit every single child." Around the world children begin their schooling at different ages. In Britain children can start school at four years old while in Finland and South Africa it is not until seven. But what is the best time for a child to enter the school system? Alderson says there are clear signs when a child is ready to start. "Children who can follow an instruction. You know, 'do this' and they go and do it. Children who are inquisitive, who are looking for interesting things. Children who are happy to engage with other children - they are all things that show readiness towards school," she says. Here in Miss Swindlehurst's class it is activity time. These children are five years old and most have been at school for around two terms of the school year (about six months). They are learning to follow instructions, to motivate themselves and to start and finish activities like cutting and sticking. As well as social activities and tasks to help co-ordination and dexterity, the children are also doing exercises which help them with learning to read. Learning to read, along with learning to write and early numeracy, are among the first sets of skills children will learn at school. Deidre Alderson says having an early grounding in reading at home, being read to and having time to play with books, helps children when they come to learn to read for themselves. "It is very important that children are being read to, are reading with and reading by, if you like, so that a child can independently look at the pages in a book, can turn the page, know the top and the bottom, know that it (the story) is sequential, can look and talk about a picture in a book but being read to so they are listening to language and playing with language," she says. Passion is five years old and is learning to read. She is having a 'guided reading' session with her teacher, part of an effort to help her learn to read with only her eyes and not use her finger to follow the words. There is disagreement around the world as to what age is best for children to start school. Some believe it is better to start earlier while others think early formal education is damaging to younger children. But the head of British school inspectors OFSTED believe children should be at school from age two. Tom Nicholson is Professor of Literacy Education at Massey University in Albany, just north of Auckland. He is an expert in how children learn to read. He says it really doesn't matter when a child starts school: You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/d0b5c87128fd41890f2dc4102dffaa84 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

This is the VOA Special English Health Report from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish One of the largest health studies ever done in the United States will look at environmental influences on children. The study will examine the many environmental and genetic factors that affect the health of children and the adults they become. Dr. Steven Hirshfeld at the National Institutes of Health is the study director. Test projects have already begun, and he says the main part of the National Children's Study will begin next year. "Our goal is to understand how you can get the healthiest, most robust child to develop into a healthy and contributing member of adult society." Researchers want to study one hundred thousand children across America. The study will collect information from before they are born until they are twenty-one years old. There are seven centers around the country where parents can join the study. For example, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, with study four thousand children in the Los Angeles area. They also plan to study one thousand children in a rural area. The aim is to see what effect pesticides used on nearby farms might have on the children's health. Dr. Michael Lu is one of the lead investigators at UCLA. He says, "We're examining a number of very important child conditions such as asthma and autism, pre-term birth and birth defects, obesity and diabetes and various behavioral and learning problems." The researchers will also study mental health disorders. Dr. Liu says, "I think this study has the potential to change the way we look at childhood health and development." The goal of the National Children's Study is to create a database that researchers around the world can use. Dr. Hirshfeld, the study director, says this information could help solve some unanswered questions. "We have knowledge gaps in many of the most important factors that influence not only the health and well-being and development of children, but that begin the foundations of what could turn into chronic conditions for adults." Findings from the study will be released as they become available. The information could lead to new policies and changes in existing laws on child health and the environment. The hope is that children can live healthier lives and grow into healthier adults. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal.
